Task Force Objectives

The aim of the task force is to carry out investigative research relating to the safety of food products derived from biotechnology, to disseminate the proper information concerning these foods, and to provide information to Codex and the Japanese government.

Main Activities To Date
During this fiscal year, the 7th Meeting of the Codex Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology is to be held in Makuhari, Chiba (scheduled for September 24 to 28, 2007). A discussion will be carried out on international guidelines concerning the safety of genetically modified plants for the improvement of nutrition, and the safety of genetically modified animals as food products. The Codex task force has already adopted the materials prepared by the ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee (IFBiC) as a basis for evaluating the safety of genetically modified plants developed to improve nutrition. Nevertheless, we want to further follow up on the progress made during this fiscal year, and to support the international standardization of the relevant regulations.

The International Workshop for Evaluating the Impact of Genetically Modified Plants on Bio-diversity was held last year. A discussion was carried out by key individuals from Japan and abroad such as the Vice Chairman of the OECD biotech panel and the Vice Chairman of the EU's GMO panel.
